First Book Canada celebrated National Newspaper Week

News Media Canada, Craft PR, and First Book Canada celebrated the launch of Champions.

Toronto, O.N. (April 08, 2024) – In collaboration with News Media Canada and Craft PR, First Book Canada celebrated National Newspaper Week. National Newspaper Week is an annual opportunity to recognize the role that newspapers and their sites play in providing Canadians with credible, factual news and spotlight why news media continues to be a trusted source of information that’s critical to our democracy.

News Media Canada published Champions, an illustrated book with a collection of inspirational stories featuring notable Canadians from the newspaper industry. This relatable, easy-to-read, and bilingual publication includes custom illustrations by Canadian artist Rachel Joanis. Through this collaboration, First Book Canada has hosted numerous Reading Celebrations inviting students to learn directly from individuals championing the truth.

This was a great experience for the students to meet and get to ask questions about news/illustration. It was especially inspiring because the guest looked up various news outlets students could get involved with in Nunavut and Baker Lake specifically.

First Book Canada’s Impact

Currently, one in four Canadian households does not have a single book in them – early-year literacy has suffered for so many children across the country. Given the importance of literacy capacity, First Book Canada knows just how important it is for children to feel like they belong in their learning environments.

First Book Canada is building a world where every child has access to a quality education. Are you looking for a positive impact on your community? Learn more about how you can support and take action with First Book Canada at firstbookcanada.org/take-action-canada/.
